Homeland of Wine Magazine: “Truly Rachvelian Wines”

Racha, Georgia

Racha is a region in northwest Georgia that is known for its beautiful nature and traditional culture. A particularly mountainous region spotted with waterfalls and mineral springs, Racha has always been a popular holiday destination for Georgians. In the world of Georgian wine, Racha holds a host of under-appreciated grape varieties within its diverse soils and climate, surprising even the most knowledgeable wine drinkers.

Nana Jojishvili explores this lesser known wine region in an article showcasing Naberauli Winery. Naberaluli is led by Anna Dokhnadze, a professional winemaker and a native of Racha, taking on the challenge of presenting Racha’s unique varieties to the Georgian wine market. When asked which of her wines expressed the region best, Anna answered Aleksandrouli:

“Initially, this wine was thick and a bit rough, much like how Rachvelians can seem at first…the same transformation happened with my wine. It has now softened, revealing pleasant berry aromas and a lively character.”

From this rough mountainous region to the global market- Racha is making its mark. The most common grape varieties currently include: Aleksandrouli, Mujuretuli, Saperavi, Dzelshavi, Tsolikouri, Usakhelouri and Rachuli Mtsvane.
