Nanua Winery: Winemaker for the Kings
Situated in the up and coming wine region of Imereti, Terjola encompasses a wild territory of villages stretching to the main city of Kutaisi. Imereti was an ancient kingdom of Georgia, once known for its royal family lineage. It’s the story behind Nanua Winery, and the family of Gia Chubinidze, who were winemakers for the last king of Imereti.
Gia retired from local government, before setting out to become a full-time winemaker in his hometown of Terjola. From his newly built tasting room, where he hosts a near constant stream of guests, hangs a quote from a king of Imereti to the Russian Emperor at the time: “I live in heaven, a place called Imereti”.
The region of Imereti holds an impressive and expansive number of native grape varietals. Nanua primarily works with tsitska, tsolikouri, otskhanuri sapere, and mamukas sapere. A particularly dark amber blend- tetri kamuri- is widely sought after in the region, as the interest in Georgian amber wines continues to grow worldwide.
Gia has been one of the public faces of the Georgian grape revival, having planted numerous of once lost varietals from the deep Georgian catalog. For Gia, Imereti is the heart and soul of Georgia, and Imereti remains a kind of heaven.
