Budeshuri Winery: Shining Eyes

Budeshuri Winery’s story begins at the start of the new millennium. The year Irakli Pirashvili was born, his grandfather Rezo, once mayor of the town of Sighnaghi, started planting the first roots. The word “budeshuri” is used in Georgian literature to describe something wide and bright, such as shining eyes or the sun. The Saperavi Budeshuri grape variety was discovered more than 600 years ago, and the origin of the name comes from the grape’s form- the contour of an almond-shaped eye, affectionately thought of as the Georgian woman’s eyes.

Irakli hosted Saperavi Brothers for an exclusive tasting and presentation of his wines in front of guests from around the world, including Canada, Estonia, and the U.K. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive for both of his saperavi varieties- classic and qvevri. The grapes hail from the esteemed vineyards of D.O.P. Nukriani in the Sighnaghi region of Kakheti, where the vines have thrived for over 20 years. Nestled in this historic region, the wine embodies the depth and character of its ancient terroir. Its savory, elegant profile, derived from the ancient vineyards of Kakheti, offered a memorable experience.
