BBC: “Georgia’s Moment of Truth”
The Georgian people have taken to the streets for days on end to protest Prime Minister Kobakhidze’s recent declaration that it would not continue negotiations with the European Union for the next four years, a surprising turn from the past twelve years spent developing the nation to become a full-fledged member of the EU. Among the protestors are Georgian winemakers, who have been a foundational piece to the economic and cultural revitalization of Georgia.
Written in the modern Georgian constitution, moving towards the EU- and away from Georgia’s other neighbors- placed the nation into a hot geo-political entanglement. Georgian wine exploded in both Western trends and exports to Western business partners, including the U.S., who has always placed its strategic interest in Georgia as a European nation. The vast majority of the Georgian people agree- near 80%- that this should be the direction of the small, but vital, Caucasian nation.
“All Eyes on Tbilisi” has been trending on social media since the government’s shock decision, catching the interest of Americans. Supporting Georgian wine and winemakers has always been our top priority, and we will continue to support them in these times as we increase our winemakers’ access and sales to American consumers, supporting their development and freedom.
